AKUFO-ADDO’S HISTORY BY ABENA OSEGU BOATENG

Read Time: < 1 minute

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his government are not just busy rewriting the history of Ghana’s independence struggle. They are also rewriting the history of the struggle of the restoration of the multi-party system in 1992. Their problem is that their inconsistency always exposes their poor logic and sometimes their blatant opportunism

In the run-up to the 2016 elections, candidate Akufo-Addo went to the residence of FLT. LT. Rawlings and declared him as the Founder of the Fourth Republic.

President Akufo-Addo had conveniently forgotten that he had said elsewhere that no one person can found a Republic or nation and to that extent Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah cannot be the founder of Ghana.

Fact is that Mr. Rawlings was not one of the people who struggled for the restoration of the multi-party order at great risk. What he did was to arrest, torture and detain many of them for agitating for a return to constitutional rule. The list of the victims of Mr. Rawlings is a very long one but I have come across a list published by Adu Boahen-led Movement for Freedom and Justice (MFJ) on May 30, 1990 in Accra under the heading “Heroes of our Time”.

It is my hope that this will be a very useful educational material for President Akufo-Addo.
