Accra School of Hygiene receives certificate of appreciation for its immense training in health and safety

The Ghana Institute of Safety and Environmental Professionals (GhISEP) have presented a certificate of appreciation to the Accra School of Hygiene at a brief ceremony at Korle-Bu in Accra.

The gesture forms part of the activities to mark the World Day for Health and Safety at Work organised by the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations and also to recognise the school’s immense contribution in the training of health and safety professionals in the country as well as the grooming of students to sustain the health and safety profession.

Presenting the certificate, the National President of GhISEP, Mrs. Miriam Eduful said the move ties into the core values and virtues of the institute which seeks to promote the advancement of the Occupational Safety, Health and the Environmental (OSHE) profession.

She said GhISEP plays a major advocacy and crucial watchdog role in the sustainability of the built environment and explained that the institute is a non-profit, non-governmental and multidisciplinary scientific organisation whose exclusive function is to foster the scientific progress, knowledge and development of occupational safety, health and the environment.

“As the sole professional body registered under the Professional Bodies Registration Decree 1973 (NRCD 143) responsible for all professionals, practitioners and technicians in the area of occupational safety and environment in the country”, she explained.

Receiving the certificate, the Principal of Accra School of Hygiene, Korle Bu, Mr. Smile Kobina Ametsi said work place health and safety is a Fundamental Human Right under (Article 24) of the 1992 Constitution.

According to him, the school have trained and successfully graduated 64 health and safety professionals as 131 students currently are in their various years of training.

He added that school have put in place the needed structures to become a training hub for professional development programmes to enhance the competencies of occupational health and safety professionals and will partner GhISEP in that regard.

He however urged GhISEP to institute programmes for students to have access to practical and internship to enhance the hands on competences in the World of Works (WoWs).
